Can I retrofit my bike with a motor?
We observe a growing interest in converting classic bikes into e-bikes. The conversion itself is legally permissible for operation as a pedelec (up to 25 km/h). Sounds great, right? But there are some caveats.
As the person performing the conversion, you assume the role of the manufacturer. Therefore, you take on product liability. You would need to pay for some tests to ensure your converted bike complies with CE certification standards.
If you feel tempted to ignore that because no one ever controls a bike anyways: If a third person suffers damage through a defective bike from your making, you’re the one responsible. And your liability insurance might not pay under these circumstances.
Consider also that frames for motor-free bikes are not engineered to handle the additional forces exerted by motor kits. Retrofitting may work. Just we will never promise that – and we cannot guarantee its safety or maintain warranties if issues arise.
