Are city bikes only for urban riding?

Not at all! The truth is, many bikes are far more versatile than their labels, such as “city” or “trekking®,” suggest. However, city bikes have some unique features that make them the better choice if you predominantly ride in urban settings.

  • Weatherproof, low-maintenance gears: City bikes typically use hub gears, which are protected against bad weather and require less upkeep. You can also shift while stationary, for example, at a traffic light.
  • Low-maintenance belt drive: At Diamant, we often use Gates belt drives. These require no lubrication and last significantly longer than a traditional chain.
  • Light rigid fork: Many city bikes forego a suspension fork. Instead, we use rigid forks, saving around 1–1.5 kg of weight—handy when carrying your bike up or down stairs.
  • Thinner tires: If you mostly ride on asphalt, thick tires aren’t necessary. You’ll still have plenty of traction, but be cautious around tram tracks.
  • Secure frame lock: Our new city bikes are designed to accommodate practical frame locks from ABUS or Axa—some models even come with them pre-installed. Frame locks are quick and convenient, especially for short stops like grocery runs.

What are the special features of city e-bikes?

City bikes are available with or without a motor. While any e-bike can technically be used in a city, those specifically designed for urban environments have some unique characteristics:

  • Smaller, lighter motors: Most European cities are flat, so smaller motors with lower torque are sufficient. These motors, like those from Hyena or Mahle, are also lighter.
  • Smaller batteries: Urban rides are usually short, so batteries with around 250 Wh are sufficient. Smaller batteries make the bikes lighter and easier to carry up stairs or into a train.
  • Integrated batteries: Check whether your battery is removable or fixed. Fixed batteries save even more weight but require a power outlet in your storage area if you can’t keep the bike indoors.
  • Minimalist displays: Many city e-bikes opt for a sleek, minimalist design with simple LED displays. If you want to see or control more, you’ll use your smartphone.

What’s the ideal riding position for a city bike?

Every Diamant bike allows you to adjust the ergonomic position. Most people prefer a more upright position on a city bike compared to a trekking® bike, as it feels more relaxed. Since the optimal riding position also depends on your anatomy, we recommend a professional bike fitting at a specialist dealer.

How do I find the right frame size for my city bike?

The ideal frame size depends on your height, inseam length, and preferred riding posture. You’ll find geometry tables on our product pages for guidance.

Tip: Take a test ride to ensure your city bike fits perfectly.

What’s the difference between urban bikes and city bikes?

At Diamant, we consider urban bikes a variation of city bikes. “Urban” sounds more dynamic, energetic, and modern—these bikes represent the latest generation of city bikes, particularly appealing to younger riders. Urban bikes are either designed for a sportier, faster riding style or stand out with unique designs and a strong focus on fashion-forward aesthetics.
